The DepEd is now under consultation with its stakeholders through an on-going online survey to know their thoughts and preferences with regards to the opening of classes for the school year 2020-2021.
In the said survey, respondents may choose their preferred schedule for the opening of classes from June to August considering the situation brought about by the COVID-19.
Meanwhile, Senator Gatchalian in an interview said that the postponement of classes by the Department of Education cannot go beyond August according to law unless an amendment will be done for this purpose.
"If ever magpo-postpone tayo, under the law, pwede lang until August unless we amend the law for this particular reason dahil iba itong nangyari sa atin eh medyo mahaba eh," Gatchalian said.
Under Republic Act 7977, "school year shall start on the first Monday of June but not later than the last day of August."
In addition to this, DepEd Palawan through their Schools Division Superintendent Natividad Bayubay, strongly recommends that the opening of classes for the SY 2020-2021 shall be in August.
“As far as the DepEd Palawan is concerned, ang aming recommendation, through SDS Natividad Bayubay, ay ang opening ng classes ay August 2020 considering the recommendation of the medical experts and the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF),” said Division Information Officer Grace Estefano.
