Sen. Sotto pushes bill to move the opening of classes to September despite DepEd decision

Senate President Vicente Sotto III is determined to push his bill that would give the President the authority to adjust the school calendar despite the announcement of the Department of Education to open the classes on August 24, 2020, either virtually or physically.

The Senate Bill No. 1438 filed by Sotto will seek to amend section 3 of the Republic Act No. 7977 or the Act on Lengthening of School Calendar, which states that the school year shall start on the first Monday of June but not later than the last day of August.

According to Sen. Sotto, he will push for the approval of this bill and hopefully moves the opening of classes to September.

"If August, we don't need the law 'di ba pero what if there is a second wave ? Paano kung may second wave? Paano sasagutin ng DepEd 'yan?" said Sotto.

This bill will not only secure the safety of the students, teachers, and all concerned, but it would also give ample time for the Department of Education to prepare and plan to approach this New Normal in Education.

  1. Sana po mabago pa decision ng deped at yung pag render ng mga teachers as school on June 1 hindi po ata tama dahil were still under ECQ. Siguro po wala ng covid sa place ni madam secretary kaya ganun po kadali sa kanila mag decision.sana ma approve po yung kay Sen toto Sotto na September at yung pag render ng mga teacher wag madalihin as long as hindi pa covid free
