The Senate has approved on its 2nd reading the bill that would give authority to the President to defer the school opening beyond August due to the existing problem on COVID-19 pandemic.
Earlier, the President made a statement that he would not allow the conduct of classes (face-to-face) until the vaccines are available. However, he is not allowed to defer the opening of classes since it is against the law as stated on Section 3 of Republic Act No. 7797 or An Act to Lengthen the School Calendar from Two Hundred (200) Days to Not More Than Two Hundred Twenty (220) Class Days.
Senate Bill No. 1541, if passed into law, would amend the said Republic Act and therefore allows the President to postpone the opening classes to any date necessary following the trend of the COVID-19 crisis.
