DepEd's Decision on the Suggested "PASS or FAIL" Grading System

The Department of Education has decided to retain its current grading system for this school year than to adopt the suggested "pass or fail" grading system.

DepEd Sec. Leonor M. Briones noted in their recent press briefing that the department aims to assess the performance of the learners despite these challenging times.

“So isipin natin ‘yan, because even as we want to make everything comfortable, safe, and loving for learners and teachers, we also want them to achieve the learning objectives which we have set for ourselves especially the expectation for better performance, not only for national assessments but international assessments,” said Briones.

DepEd Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction, Diosdado San Antonio, also emphasized that the suggestion for the "pass or fail" grading system would entail additional work for the teachers which the department does not want to imply in this time of pandemic.

He added that universities and colleges will also rely on the grades gained by the students in giving scholarships which will require numerical ratings.

“Itong mga ito ang mga dahilan kung bakit nakikita natin na ang numerical rating ay mas angkop kahit meron tayong COVID-19, kasi kailangan mabigyan din talaga ng motibasyon ang mga bata para sila ay mas maging interesadong mag-aral,” said San Antonio.
