Medical allowance for teachers not included in the 2021 DepEd Proposed Budget

Senator Win Gatchalian is bothered about the 2021 proposed DepEd budget amounting to P563 billion which does not include a medical allowance for public school teachers especially now in the time of health crisis.

"Removing that medical benefit for teachers sends a wrong signal, a bad signal that in times of a pandemic, we are not taking care of them," Gatchalian said during the budget debates in the Senate.

"The COVID-19 pandemic is a medical issue and the medical benefit is a good source for them to address this medical issue," he added.

Senator Pia Cayetano, who sponsored the DepEd's budget in the plenary, refused to have a separate fund for the medical allowance saying that teachers may use their annual P5,000 allowance for medical needs.

"They included it as part of the expenses that can be used by teachers for their allowances so it's a choice that they make," said Cayetano.

She also stressed that the government has a lot to spend next year which includes the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines.
