The Department of Education (DepEd) stated that all school heads have the authority to determine whether to suspend face-to-face classes at their schools due to the severe heat caused by the El Niño phenomenon.
School heads are reminded of their authority and responsibility to suspend in-person classes (F2F) and automatically implement Modular Distance Learning (MDL) or Online Learning in cases of unfavorable weather and environment, particularly where there is an extremely high temperature.
The provincial government and local government units are also authorized to suspend face-to-face classes in their areas to prevent putting the learners' and teachers' health at risk
Assistant Secretary Francis Bringas from the Department of Education emphasized that the policy regarding class suspension will be communicated once more to public schools across the country due to the anticipated continuation of El Niño until May 2024.
Region IV-A CALABARZON has released a Regional Memorandum No. 233, s. 2024 entitled Adoption of Modular Distance Learning and Preventive Measures During Extremely High Temperature.
The memorandum states that the Regional Management Committee has unanimously agreed that 40 degrees Celsius is the minimum threshold for the suspension of face-to-face classes and the eventual adoption of MDL.
