Lawmaker stands against the idea of Saturday classes, demands to review unnecessary' holidays and extracurricular activities

During the House Committee on Basic Education and Culture meeting on Monday, Department of Education director Leila Areola mentioned that the department might schedule classes on some Saturdays to make up for educational setbacks when they switch back to the traditional school calendar.

House Deputy Majority Leader Janette Garin, on the other hand, is not in favor to the proposal this proposal, arguing that it would cause extra costs for parents who transport their children to school.

"I am not amenable to having Saturday classes in order to catch-up. But I am proposing before the Department of Education to do away with unnecessary holidays. To do away with many other activities that actually take away academic hours among the students," Garin said.

Garin also stressed that Saturday classes will obviously bring additional burden to parents who also work during weekends.

The legislator also suggested that the Department of Education might want to reduce the number of extracurricular activities.
