On Thursday, incoming Education Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara emphasized that enhancing teachers' benefits would be a key focus for him, as he pledged to consider proposals aimed at raising their salaries to P50,000.
When asked about the feasibility of increasing entry-level teachers' salaries to P50,000, Angara responded that he would explore this possibility by collaborating with other agencies, such as the Department of Finance (DOF) and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).
In a radio interview, he expressed confidence that the Marcos administration would raise teachers' salaries, though he wasn't certain whether the increase would happen this year or the next.
"Pero tayo, hundred percent in support po tayo for all of these teachers' increases dahil alam natin na apektado 'yung kalidad ng edukasyon kapag talagang inspired 'yung mga teachers at you attract the best, 'yung pinakamagagaling, the best and the brightest ika nga," he said.
In February, legislators from the Makabayan bloc, including France Castro of the ACT Teachers party-list, Arlene Brosas of the Gabriela party-list, and Raoul Manuel of the Kabataan party-list, introduced House Bill 9920. This bill aims to establish a P50,000 entry-level salary for public school teachers.
