DepEd to conduct an eight-week learning recovery plan this school year, concentrating on math, reading, and science

On August 29, 2024, the House Committee on Basic Education approved House Resolution 1805, urging the Department of Education (DepEd) to pause its standard academic schedule in favor of an eight to twelve-week program aimed at improving literacy and numeracy skills.

DepEd Undersecretary for Curriculum and Teaching, Gina Gonong, outlined the department's strategy, which includes a specialized science program and a focused literacy and numeracy curriculum for 1.6 million students in Grades 7-10.

This initiative, scheduled to start in the first half of the 2024-2025 school year, aims to prepare students for the 2025 Programme for International Assessment, which will emphasize Science. DepEd plans to use the Revised Philippine Informal Reading Inventory and Rapid Math Assessment as tools for both initial and final evaluations.
