P15,000 Salary Increase for Teachers Must Be a Key Election Issue, Says TDC


The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) is urging candidates in the upcoming elections to prioritize the proposed P15,000 across-the-board salary increase for public school teachers. The advocacy group emphasizes that genuine education reform must include improved compensation for educators.

A Call for Legislative Action

The bill proposing the salary hike is currently pending in the Senate, and the TDC is pressing lawmakers to act on the measure with urgency. TDC Chairperson Benjo Basas highlighted that while the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2) has conducted an in-depth review of the country’s education system, it has not provided a clear roadmap for addressing teachers’ salaries and benefits.

“The work of EDCOM 2 is valuable in diagnosing the problems in our education system, but sadly, no clear direction has been provided when it comes to the salaries and benefits of our teachers,” Basas stated.

Elections as a Platform for Teachers’ Rights

Basas stressed that the upcoming elections present an opportunity for educators and education advocates to push candidates—especially those running for legislative positions—to take a firm stand on salary increases.

“We challenge all candidates to make a clear commitment to supporting the P15,000 across-the-board increase for teachers. This must be a non-negotiable part of their platform. Our teachers’ salaries have remained stagnant while inflation continues to rise, making it difficult for them to sustain their families and perform their duties effectively,” Basas added.

A History of Insufficient Salary Adjustments

The TDC pointed out that while previous administrations have implemented incremental salary adjustments, these have been inadequate in addressing the financial struggles of public school teachers. The group maintains that a significant pay hike is essential to boost teachers’ morale and enhance the quality of education in the country.

Beyond Salary Hikes: Long-Term Reforms Needed

Basas also underscored the need for long-term reforms beyond salary increases, including improved healthcare, housing assistance, and legal support for teachers facing administrative and legal challenges.

“We must go beyond token increases. Teachers are the backbone of our education system, and investing in them is investing in the future of our nation. It is time for our policymakers to prioritize teachers and ensure that they receive what they rightfully deserve,” Basas emphasized.

TDC’s Commitment to Advocacy

With the elections approaching, the TDC has committed to actively engaging with candidates and the public to ensure that teacher welfare issues remain a central topic of national discussions.

“The decision on who will sit in Congress is crucial in determining the fate of our teachers. We urge our colleagues in the education sector to scrutinize the platforms of candidates and vote for those who genuinely support teachers’ rights and welfare,” Basas concluded.

As the election season gains momentum, the TDC continues to rally support for teachers, advocating for policies that will provide them with the compensation and benefits they deserve.
