The Department of Education (DepEd) has confirmed the distribution of over 62,000 laptops and smart TV packages worth P1.8 billion to schools across 16 regions in the latter half of the year.
This initiative, prioritized by Education Secretary Sonny Angara in his first six months in office, has been facilitated by an expedited procurement process. As of February 4, 2025, DepEd has successfully completed Early Procurement Activities (EPA) for 23,614 smart TV packages, 33,539 laptops for teachers, and 5,328 laptops for non-teaching staff.
Regions IV-A (CALABARZON), VI (Western Visayas), and VIII (Eastern Visayas) have been allocated the largest shares of the ICT equipment.
Although DepEd initially faced a P10-billion budget cut—reducing its original target of 800,000 laptops and smart TVs—the rollout remains on track. With the backing of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his fiscal management team, DepEd is collaborating closely with the Department of Finance to restore funding and sustain its digital education programs.
"Our commitment to digital learning continues this year, with the support of President Bongbong and my fellow cabinet members. We aim to provide every school with an ‘e-cart,’ a mobile computer lab for students. Additionally, we are equipping teachers with essential software tools to enhance instruction," Angara stated. He also emphasized that the success of the EPA aligns with President Marcos Jr.’s pledge during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) to bridge the digital divide through the DepEd Computerization Program (DCP).
The initiative seeks to address the country’s ongoing challenge of a low teacher-to-laptop ratio. A recent report from the Second Congressional Commission on Education (Edcom II) highlighted that improved access to technology enables teachers to be more effective, particularly in regions where alternative learning methods remain necessary due to natural disasters.
Beyond supporting educators, the provision of laptops is expected to enhance students' digital literacy, improve their familiarity with online learning platforms, and strengthen their problem-solving skills.
