Education Secretary Sonny Angara has called on the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) to assist in addressing a bullying incident reported at Bagong Silangan High School. A disturbing video circulating on social media showed a female student being attacked by several classmates inside a classroom, prompting public concern and a swift response from education authorities. In a formal letter to QCPD Director Brig. Gen. Melecio Buslig Jr., Angara emphasized that the involvement of minors necessitates a sensitive and expert approach.
The Department of Education (DepEd) has already activated internal protocols and instructed the school to fast-track its investigation while offering support to the students involved. However, Angara stressed the importance of tapping into the expertise of law enforcement, especially the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) Women and Children Protection Desk. He urged collaboration with DepEd’s Learner Rights and Protection Office (LRPO) to ensure the safety and dignity of all parties are preserved throughout the process. “Your specialized training and protocols are instrumental in treating the children involved with compassion and due process,” Angara noted.
Meanwhile, DepEd Media Relations chief Dennis Legaspi assured the public that the department remains committed to providing a safe educational environment. He reiterated the need for a unified effort from learners, educators, and parents in addressing bullying. The DepEd has committed to completing the investigation swiftly and will also convene the school’s Child Protection Committee. Support mechanisms will be extended not only to the victim but also to other students involved to ensure a fair and rehabilitative process.
